Let’s dive into the Best of the Week…
2024 NHL Stadium Series Gets Underway
The first night of the 2024 NHL Stadium Series from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey kicked off with the New Jersey Devils beating the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3. In the game, Devils captain Nico Hischier had two goals and an assist.
The series continues today at 3 P.M. Eastern with the New York Rangers and New York Islanders squaring off.
Flyers Name Sean Couturier 20th Captain in Franchise History
The Flyers announced earlier this week that they’ve landed on center Sean Couturier as their captain. The club hasn’t had a captain since Claude Giroux served from 2012 to 2022, before being traded to the Florida Panthers. Couturier has spent his entire career with the Flyers. He made his debut in 2011-12 and has over 700 games under his belt in Philadelphia.
Couturier’s ability to stay healthy this season after missing last season has to be a big reason why he was the choice. This seems like the right choice.
Jaromir Jagr Hits the Ice With Penguins Ahead of Jersey Retirement
Hockey legend Jaromir Jagr hit the ice with the Pittsburgh Penguins and had some fun ahead of getting his number retired. Today is the day for as No. 68 will be sent up to the rafters at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, PA. Here’s more on the ceremony via NHL.com …
Jagr will have his No. 68 retired before the Penguins host the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday (6 p.m. ET; SN-PIT, BSW, SN360, TVAS), joining Mario Lemieux (66) and Michel Briere (21). In 11 seasons with Pittsburgh, Jagr had 1,079 points (439 goals, 640 assists) in 806 games, the fourth most in franchise history behind Mario Lemieux (1,723), Crosby (1,556) and Malkin (1,270). He helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992.
It’s a well-deserved honor for Jagr, who has played 15 games in the Czech league this season at age 52.
Panthers Score Nine Goals in Convincing Win Over Lightning
The Florida Panthers might be the best team in the Eastern Conference. They beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 9-2 on Saturday at Amalie Arena in Tampa. The Panthers have outscored their opponents 51-18 amid their 11-game road winning streak. They are 36-15-4 and first in the conference with 76 points. Head coach Paul Maurice has this team playing very well.
Capitals’ Oshie Nets 300th Goal of NHL Career
Washington Capitals forward T.J. Oshie netted his 300th career NHL goal in the club’s 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Earlier in the week (Feb. 15) marked the 10th anniversary of Oshie’s legendary shootout performance in the Sochi Olympics in a U.S. win over Russia. He’s had incredible longevity in his career and has earned the opportunity to score 300 goals.
