Today in Hockey History: Aug. 7
Aug. 7 is a bittersweet day in NHL history as the hockey world lost one of its greatest players on this date. It also saw one of the greatest goaltenders of all-time change addresses and finally get his chance to be a full-time starter. Finally, a future Hall-of-Famer in Sidney Crosby was born in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia.
Alexander Mogilny Is Hockey Hall Of Fame Worthy
The fact that Alexander Mogilny has not received enshrinement in the Hockey Hall of Fame is more than a bit perplexing. The man who was nicknamed “Magic” during his early years in Buffalo assembled perhaps the least considered storied career in the NHL. Fans and hockey historians are beginning to forget how talented he truly was.
Canadiens Who Just Missed Out on Calder Trophy Before Caufield
Montreal Canadiens rookie Cole Caufield looks like a new man under then-interim head coach Martin St. Louis. Well, at least a new version of the old Caufield, who took the NHL by relative surprise, when he became a key component on the team during the Habs’ 2021 run to the Stanley Cup Final.

Plus, two Hall of Fame players landed in the final destinations of their great careers. Let’s hop aboard the THW time machine and relive all the top moments from Aug. 6.

Kane Is Already the Greatest American-Born NHL Player of All-Time
The 100th player in NHL history to join the 400-goal club, Patrick Kane is still far from being done dominating. Sitting in third all-time for overall production by a US-born player, he also ranks highest among active athletes on that list with time ahead of him to further his case as the most elite American ever.
Pavel Bure – A Tribute to the Russian Rocket
“Pavel Bure was – and is – the best player to ever wear a Canucks’ uniform.” — Pat Quinn, former Canucks GM (from ‘Ex-GM Pat Quinn calls Pavel Bure the best Canuck ever’ – Greg Douglas, Vancouver Sun, 04/12/2013)
