One of the biggest storylines of the offseason wasn't free agency, the NHL Draft or trades, it was movement on the coaching and management level.
The NHL offseason isn’t just a time when teams find new players and draft new prospects. It’s often a period where adjustments are made in the coaching and executive ranks. Inevitably, each season, some teams want a new voice or someone different pulling the strings. This offseason wasn’t shy of storylines on that front.
Here are a handful of the biggest and most surprising hires when it comes to coaches and executives in the NHL this summer.
Craig Berube Replaces Sheldon Keefe as Maple Leafs Head Coach
This decision wasn’t surprising, but it might be the biggest move on our list for a few reasons. First, it’s Toronto, so the attention on the decision is magnified. Second, because the Toronto Maple Leafs had few cards left to play, switching out the coach may be this organization’s final grasp at playoff success.
Craig Berube is the flashy new coach in Toronto. He comes in with a big personality and a Stanley Cup pedigree. But, can he do something no other coach has been able to do with this group of star players and get them to be more than just a really good regular-season team? The Maple Leafs certainly hope so.
