Hurricanes Player of the Month: Jordan Martinook
January 29, 2024 by Zach Martin (Premium THW Substack Content)
Martinook's January has been otherworldly as the forward leads the Hurricanes in goals. How has the "Marty Party" taken over in Raleighwood before the All-Star Break?
As the calendar turned to 2024, the Carolina Hurricanes were riding a three-game winning streak before facing the New York Rangers on Jan. 2 in New York. The team ended up winning that game along with the following one versus the Washington Capitals on Friday, Jan. 5. As the month went along, a familiar face who stepped up for the Hurricanes in the 2023 NHL Playoffs started to catch fire when it was needed most.
Hurricanes Need to Sign RFAs Soon to Make the Offseason Easier
January 30, 2024 by Collin Madewell
As hockey fans wait for the kickoff of the NHL’s All-Star Weekend in Toronto, I think it’s time to pivot to the offseason. At the time of writing the Carolina Hurricanes only have 11 of their NHL regulars under contract for the 2024-25 season. I can already feel your eyes rolling as you read that last sentence.
Yes, it could be considered early to talk about offseason plans. However, I’d argue if the front office doesn’t start working on re-signings now they’ll be overloaded when free agency arrives on the horizon. An easy first step in this process is to look at the team’s pending restricted free agents (RFAs).
Hurricanes’ Andersen to Begin On-Ice Conditioning
January 31, 2024 by Collin Madewell
On Wednesday (Jan. 31) morning, the Carolina Hurricanes released statements on behalf of general manager Don Waddell and Frederik Andersen with an update on the netminder’s recovery process. Andersen hasn’t played or practiced with his team since early November after medical testing discovered a blood-clotting issue.
“In November, Frederik Andersen was diagnosed with a deep-vein thrombosis and subsequent pulmonary embolisms,” Waddell said in his statement. “He has been on anti-coagulation medication since that time, and working with a team of experts to obtain medical opinions as to how he can return to playing safely. Frederik has resumed off-ice activities without complication and will now begin limited on-ice conditioning. We will provide additional updates as the process continues to progress.”
Questions That Will Dictate Hurricanes’ Trade Deadline
February 1, 2024 by Collin Madewell
All of the recent news flying about the Carolina Hurricanes has made it difficult for some fans to know what to expect approaching the NHL’s trade deadline on March 8. What’s going on with Tony DeAngelo? Are the Hurricanes still shopping for a netminder? Is there anything else the team should be addressing before the deadline? What can we learn from history? Do they even have the assets to pull off a difference-making trade?
These are fair and pressing questions to have about the Hurricanes as January turns into February. Thankfully the answers aren’t hard to find if you’re willing to do the leg work. Here’s what you need to know as we gear up for the havoc that could be the trade deadline.
Hurricanes Should Trade for Flames’ Sharangovich
February 1, 2024 by Zach Martin
All eyes will be on this weekend’s 2024 NHL All-Star Game. However, the trade deadline is right around the corner, on March 8. While the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks recently swapped Andrei Kuzmenko and Elias Lindholm, that is just the beginning of a busy trade period that lies ahead.
The Carolina Hurricanes could be looking to add to a roster that has been on fire since Dec. 1. Questions still surround their goalie situation as they are thin at the position. Frederik Andersen was recently cleared for limited on-ice conditioning, and management also claimed Spencer Martin off waivers in the middle of January to figure out the situation. The team could also use depth on defense or even somewhere in the forward group.
