How is 89 assists mind-boggling when Gretzky used to regularly get 100. I believe Orr had 102 one year.

By today’s NHL standards, 89 assists is indeed, mind boggling, especially when you add 64 goals. Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman and Nichols feasted on smaller goalies that wouldn’t have made it today

Assists have more to do with passing skills than goalie sizes. What is mind boggling is that Gretzky’s assists alone were a higher number than the combined goals and assists of his runner-ups. Meaning his assists alone would have won him his scoring titles!

Dennis Maruk scored 60 goals in 1981/82 for Washington. Anyone remember that? The same year, Gretzky scored 50 goals in 39 games on his way to 92 goals and 212 points. And you think that tiny inferior goalies didn’t play a huge part in that? Lol!
