Canadiens Should Leverage Salary Retention at Trade Deadline

The Montreal Canadiens made an important move when they traded Sean Monahan to the Winnipeg Jets for a first-round pick in 2024 on Feb. 2. During his press conference, General Manager (GM) Kent Hughes mentioned that if he was going to use his last salary retention slot this season, he wanted it to be a better deal with more value. With the trade deadline looming, Hughes has other players he could move for maximum value, or he can participate as a third party in another team’s move. Here is a look at three options for Hughes to use his final retention spot.

Islanders Stadium Series Loss Shows Retool Is Needed

The collapse in the Stadium Series game on Feb. 18 in a lot of ways summarized how this season has gone for the New York Islanders. The team showed up for two periods of action and played well, building up a 4-1 lead 25 minutes into the game. During the early phases of the game, this was the Islanders team that looked capable of not only making the playoffs but a deep playoff run.

After a massive comeback victory against the New York Islanders, they find themselves focused on their next matchup against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday (Feb. 20), where they will look to build off their strong game. As they head toward the trade deadline, they will be focused on adding assets to bolster their lineup in hopes of making a deep playoff run. One player they have reportedly been connected to is Philadelphia Flyers’ forward Scott Laughton, who could provide stability to the Rangers’ forward depth.
