This date in National Hockey League history has had a little bit of everything over the years. The greatest player to ever lace up a pair of skates was traded. There was an Entry Draft loaded with Hall of Fame talent, and one of the top goal scorers of all time was born. So, let’s begin our daily trip back in time to relive all the best moments from Aug. 9.
Stan Mikita: A True Chicago Legend
On Aug. 7, 2018, the hockey world lost one of its greatest ambassadors and the city of Chicago lost one of its biggest sports legends. Stan Mikita passed away at age 78. His legacy will be remembered by Chicago Blackhawks fans for generations to come.
Top 10 Latvians in NHL History
Perhaps no time did the country of Latvia fall into the gaze of the hockey world more than when the country of just under two million people helped attain the most votes in fan voting for the 2015 NHL All-Star Game. Due the support of his fellow countrymen, Latvian Zemgus Girgensons was the runaway leader by well over 300,000 votes. With a total of 1,574,896 nods in his favor, it seemed as if the entire nation played a role in voting him into the competition. Numbers-wise, that was very nearly the case.

Today in Hockey History: Aug. 8
Aug. 8 hasn’t traditionally been a busy day when it comes to hockey. Having said that, it did see a few new captains named and an under-the-radar signing by the Los Angeles Kings that became huge during the 1979-80 season. There were also a pair of Hall of Famers born, including a legend in Montreal.

As mentioned in this article’s companion piece, the Boston Bruins have come out on the winning end of several of the most lopsided trades in NHL history. Milt Schmidt turned around a moribund franchise by acquiring Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield from Chicago for pennies on the dollar.
