Since the 2022-23 season, the Detroit Red Wings’ leadership group has remained steady without much fluctuation. Headlined by captain Dylan Larkin, the four-year captain’s alternates were all veterans brought in during free agency: Ben Chiarot, Andrew Copp and David Perron. Though a few other players wore an ‘A’ on their sweater over the last two seasons, this group of four has been entrenched as the team’s on-ice leaders.

Yes, the Detroit Red Wings have plenty of goaltending depth. That said, they should still pursue a trade to acquire John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks.
Gibson is still a highly talented goalie, and would be Detroit’s clear-cut No. 1 if acquired. It’s a rare circumstance where the future value of a veteran player will likely exceed his present value. The Red Wings need to jump on this opportunity before another team does. Here’s why.
Why Red Wings’ Quiet Offseason Was the Right Call Long Term

Plenty of ink has been spilled since the NHL’s Free Agency arrived on July 1 about the uncharacteristically quiet offseason for Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings. Through the first few days of free agency, the team hadn’t added any significant assets, and had lost an important leader and depth scorer in David Perron, not to mention the brutal Jake Walman trade that baffled hockey fans the world over.
This was a Red Wings team that missed out on the playoffs by a tiebreaker of all things, a team that theoretically should have been aggressive this summer in raising their long term ceiling so they could become consistent contenders rather than a coin flip to make the playoffs, and instead it looked like they decided to bring back mostly the same group next year.
