Last year, the Detroit Red Wings took a step back offensively while adjusting to Derek Lalonde’s style of play. This year has been different, though. Through 24 games, the Red Wings have scored 91 goals. Their 3.79 goals per game rate is third-best in the NHL. Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Larkin, and Lucas Raymond lead the way in scoring with 13, 10, and 8 goals, respectively. But are they the team’s most dangerous shooters? I dove into the data to find out.

When Steve Yzerman took over as general manager of the Detroit Red Wings in 2019, the team was in disarray. Coming off a second straight missed postseason, Detroit’s cupboard was bare of talented playmakers, and the future looked dim. Fast forward to 2023, and “The Yzerplan” is beginning to take shape. The signing of free agent Patrick Kane earlier this week solidified the fact that Yzerman views his club as a postseason contender. Yet, one under-the-radar signing by the team legend is making a difference this season: Joseph Taylor Compher.
