Team USA Players to Watch at 2024 WJC
December 10, 2023 by Haynes Evans
The 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship is approaching fast and the road to gold in Gothenburg has begun. Teams have started to release their preliminary rosters ahead of the week-and-a-half-long tournament beginning Dec. 26. One of the biggest favorites heading into the tournament is Team USA, which boasts a very deep and talented roster full of plenty of future NHL stars.
Among the star-spangled list of talent sits a slew of names to keep tabs on throughout the tournament. Among the few are the potential line combo of Will Smith-Gabe Perreault-Ryan Leonard, Jimmy Snuggerud, Lane Hutson, Seamus Casey, and goaltender Jacob Fowler. For Team USA, it’s gold or nothing in this year’s tournament. Ahead of final rosters, we at The Hockey Writers take a deep dive into the names mentioned above and why you should be keeping tabs on them later this month.
2023 World Junior A Challenge Preview
December 10, 2023 by Blain Potvin
The World Junior A Challenge (WJAC) is back and is set to kick off in Truro, Nova Scotia, with some of the best players in Junior A hockey facing off with national pride and gold on the line. This year’s tournament starts on Dec. 10th and runs through to the 17th, with the host nation fielding two teams (Canada West and Canada East) while Team USA, Team Sweden, and Team Slovakia round out the tournament participants
This tournament may not have the exposure or fanfare of the World Junior Championships that will start later this month, but this is a critical tournament for many scouts and their evaluation process. Because most of the participants are players who are in leagues that allow them to retain their NCAA eligibility, they get far less exposure than players who are in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL).
2024 Guide to the World Junior Championship
December 9, 2023 by Logan Horn
With December well underway, it’s time to look ahead to the next big event on the hockey calendar, the 2024 World Junior Championship. Last year we got the first sense of normalcy for this tournament in quite some time, with plenty of fans in attendance and a raucous atmosphere in both Halifax and Moncton.
This year the tournament has found a new home in Gothenburg, Sweden after being hosted in Canada four straight times (three in Edmonton including the cancelled one, and one on the East Coast), and has returned to the usual holiday season schedule. Here’s to hoping we get another wildly exciting tournament this year!
Coyotes News & Rumors: Geekie, Keller & More
December 9, 2023 by Cooper Krigbaum
In the Western Hockey League (WHL), making promising strides forward is all that matters; it’s not always about points. Although, for Coyotes’ 2022 first-round pick Geekie has been on an unreal tear to begin the season in the WHL.
The ending of his 2022-23 campaign left much optimism; he had 77 points in 66 games. This season has been different, notching 20 goals and 49 points in 25 games. It’s almost as if he was shot out of a cannon, especially with his recent four-goal performance, propelling the Wenatchee Wild to victory.
