In order to become a dominant NHL team, you often have to suffer through some dark periods. Many recent Stanley Cup winners including the Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche, and Tampa Bay Lightning are all perfect examples of this. While all three are now very strong teams, there were some tough years beforehand.

3 Free Agent Rentals the Flames Should Target This Offseason

It is almost mid-July, and the NHL is nearing its offseason lull. The intensity of the free agency frenzy has faded as all of the big-ticket unrestricted free agents (UFAs) have either been re-signed or have inked deals with new teams. The rest of the summer will see some minor league, minimum salary, and short-term contracts sprinkled around to the best of the remaining available players. The Calgary Flames and general manager Craig Conroy smartly didn’t make any big waves this summer, rather electing to spend wisely and instead continue to build towards their retooling process. No contract longer than two years and no average annual value (AAV) higher than $3.5 million have been given out by the Flames so far. Because of this, the team currently has an NHL-high $21 million in available cap space.

4 Teams That Could Acquire Edmonton Oilers’ Cody Ceci

The Edmonton Oilers have gone from being heartbroken after losing Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final to trading into the first round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft to focusing on upgrading their team in hopes of making another deep run in the 2024-25 campaign. With several changes and additions including the signings of Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson, as well as a trade that saw Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio head to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Matthew Savoie, the Oilers may still need to move some money out to re-sign their restricted free agents (RFA). One potential trade candidate is defender Cody Ceci, who could have some interest from several teams around the NHL looking to upgrade their depth on the blue line. Here are four teams that could look to acquire Ceci if the Oilers do make him available.
