Blackhawks News & Rumors: Bedard, Kane, Athanasiou & More
March 1, 2024 by Gail Kauchak
The month of February has drawn to a close, which is a relief for the struggling Chicago Blackhawks. Out of 10 games this past month, the team has only won a single game. Granted, three contests went to overtime, and the Blackhawks lost by just one goal four times. But none of that really matters when a team is forced to deal with so many losses. The good news is Connor Bedard returned from a broken jaw on Feb. 15, and the rest of the team is slowly getting healthy after a plethora of injuries. Hopefully this will lead to a more productive March. That said, let’s get to some of the latest news and rumors.
Possible Trade Packages for Blackhawks’ Colin Blackwell
February 29, 2024 by Brooke LoFurno
With Petr Mrazek, Jason Dickinson, and Nick Foligno getting contract extensions, the Chicago Blackhawks won’t have big trade chips at the NHL Trade Deadline on March 8. However, it doesn’t mean they will stand pat. When I contacted some of my colleagues about Blackhawks players their respective teams could use, one name kept reappearing: Colin Blackwell. He has eight points in 29 games after missing 10 months due to a sports hernia and has been noticeable every night as a tough, high-energy forward on the bottom six, and others have taken notice. Therefore, I teamed up with my colleagues Michael Ostrower (Los Angeles Kings) and Sam Henes (New York Rangers) to play around with hypothetical trade packages for Blackwell.
Blackhawks’ Athanasiou Needs to Treat Injury Return as a Reset
February 29, 2024 by Hunter Crowther
Before the start of the 2023-24 campaign, I wrote about how this could be the season Chicago Blackhawks’ forward Andreas Athanasiou changes his reputation. After signing a two-year, $8.5 million contract, the 29-year-old earned some financial flexibility, but now it was time to cement his status in the NHL as a legitimate, consistent goal scorer, someone who could shake off the scouting report of someone who doesn’t always give their best effort. This was his chance to write his own narrative. But that didn’t happen. Not even close.
