Today in Hockey History: May 24
The top three National Hockey League teams you think of when it comes to dynasties all won Stanley Cups on this date. Today is also the anniversary of the most memorable playoff game that never happened. Let’s begin our daily trip back in time to enjoy all the best moments May 24 has given us over the years.
Vladislav Tretiak: Goaltending Guru
Over the last few decades, individuals such as Vladislav Tretiak have shaped the game of hockey in unbelievable ways. It has often been noted that Tretiak never had a fair shot to compete in the NHL back in the 1980s, but the Russian netminder changed the face of the game for future goaltenders in his 15-plus seasons with the Russian Red Army Team, CSKA Moscow.
Canucks Forgotten Ones: Michael Peca
Michael Peca is mostly known for his time with the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders, but during the 1992 NHL Draft, the Canucks selected the Toronto, Ontario native 40th overall. He ended up playing only 37 games in the orange and black before getting traded in the package to acquire superstar Alexander Mogilny from the Sabres in 1995.

Rangers’ 5 Best Late-Round Draft Picks
With the 2023 NHL Draft in the rearview mirror, many New York Rangers fans would be hard-pressed to name any of their team’s bottom-round selections made at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.
Florida Panthers Jersey History
The Florida Panthers are, and pretty much always have been, one of the most colorful teams in the National Hockey League. On the figurative side of things, whether it’s arena shenanigans, overbearing ownership, or former general manager Dale Tallon’s twisted revenge plot, the Panthers are never, ever boring. And on the literal side of things, the Cats debuted in 1993 with a thoroughly loud, vibrant color palette of red, gold and navy, perfect for a Floridian team making inroads in a new market.
