Treliving Clarifies Cap Rumor Regarding Klingberg’s Injury

In an attempt to provide clarity to the media on what’s going on with John Klingberg, Toronto Maple Leafs’ GM Brad Treliving provided a few updates on Monday, while also subtly putting to bed any speculation that the organization might have been trying to pull off some sort of sneaky, salary-cap beneficial move regarding the defenseman.
Erik Gustafsson’s Success a Missed Opportunity for Maple Leafs

The late February 2023 trade that sent defenseman Erik Gustafsson from the Washington Capitals to the Toronto Maple Leafs, along with a first-round pick (Easton Cowan), in exchange for Rasmus Sandin has escaped the memories of Maple Leafs fans. Certainly, many continue to believe that losing Sandin was an issue because they thought he was headed toward becoming a solid player. Others point to Cowan as a diamond in the rough, who the team is surprisingly fortunate to have on their roster.

Inconsistency has been the name of the game for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2023-24. Poor defensive efforts, question marks in net and a lack of balance in scoring and the team is fortunate to be where they are in the Atlantic Division 19 games into the season.
The offseason acquisitions have been hit and miss and injuries have piled on already this season with half of their starting defensive corps having dealt with issues. That said, Sheldon Keefe and the team have powered through and, in doing so, remain amongst the best in their division.

After a challenging weekend that yielded just one point out of a possible four in two games, the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in a tough spot. Tied for fourth place in the Atlantic Division and trailing the second-place Florida teams by a mere two points, the team is still searching for its stride this season. Despite the precarious position, glimmers of promise are emerging amid these losses. That promise is embodied by two new players to the team’s lineup this season — Matthew Knies and Tyler Bertuzzi.
