As fans of NHL hockey, we watch, cheer for, sometimes agonize over, and often complain about our beloved Toronto Maple Leafs players. What we sometimes do is forget these players are human beings just like us.
Yes, they are paid well for what they do, very well indeed. We’re sure all of us would love to get paid at the same level as an NHL hockey player. Even those making the so-called league minimum are making $1 million a year in Canadian money.

By now, the new NHL season is a couple of weeks deep. Most teams are approaching the 10-game mark in their respective seasons and can start to see where their strengths and weaknesses lie.
It’s no different for Sheldon Keefe and his Toronto Maple Leafs who sit at 5-2-1 through their first eight games of the 2023-24 season tied with two other clubs for second in the Atlantic Division.

‘William Nylander was great again for the Toronto Maple Leafs.’ It’s a statement that has been said a number of times already this season and while that’s incredibly positive for the Maple Leafs in terms of their playoff aspirations, it’s also problematic financially.
In fact, one insider said, “If you’re keeping William Nylander and you’re paying him north of $10 million. Who’s going? Is it Marner? Who is it? Somebody’s got to go because four and a half isn’t gonna cover all of the big money guys.”
