Today in Hockey History: Oct. 18
Oct. 18 has seen some memorable victories in NHL history, including the first for two expansion teams. Many personal milestones were reached, including first goals and shutouts and even a significant first professional contract. So, let’s begin our daily journey back in time to enjoy all the best moments this date has given us over the years.
Top 10 Highest Scoring NHL Games of the Modern Era
by Alex Chauvancy
Offense is making a comeback in the NHL. Games are finishing with higher scores, as the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets displayed in a 15-goal affair a couple of years ago. The average of goals per game has gone up over the last few seasons, and the number of 100-point scorers each season has increased, too.
With teams becoming savvier and finding better ways to create shots and scoring chances, it doesn’t seem like goal-scoring is going away any time soon. So we figured it’d be a good time to go back and look at the 10 highest-scoring games of the modern NHL (1967-present).
3 Best Trades in Senators History
The Ottawa Senators have made their fair share of trades throughout their history. Some of those moves have seen them come out on top, but others have fans wondering what just happened. As with any NHL team, the return a team can get for a particular player or pick can vary a great deal. Are they buyers or sellers at the trade deadline? Is the organization in a rebuild? Did the player ask to be traded or was a player causing issues for the team, like what happened with Dany Heatley and Mike Hoffman?
The answers to these questions can drastically change the return a general manager can get in a trade. Luckily for the Senators, they’ve had a number of transactions that saw them come out on top. Some of the greatest players of all time for the team have come through trades, whether straight-up hockey trades or through draft picks. Here are the three top swaps in Senators’ history.
Today in Hockey History: Oct. 17
Some of the greatest players in National Hockey League history had big moments on this date. The records for the most wins by a goaltender and points by a defenseman were broken, and the first European-born player to score 500 goals hit his milestone. The THW time machine is ready to take us back to relive all the great moments from Oct. 17.
Boston Bruins Logo History
by Brandon Share-Cohen
The Boston Bruins: known worldwide as one of the National Hockey League’s Original Six…except they didn’t actually come along until seven years after the league began play. There were also only four teams in the NHL’s original iteration. Whatever. We’ll gloss over that.
The Boston Bruins: known worldwide for their classic, Spoked-B logo…except that this logo didn’t appear until a quarter-century into the team’s existence. Along with their seminal crest, the Bruins have chosen aggressive animals, giant letters, football numbers, collegiate script and Winnie the Pooh to adorn their jerseys. Plus, once something actually works, they feel the need to incessantly tweak it. But yeah, classic, timeless, legendary, Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, Tom Brady, etc etc etc.
