The NHL’s Top 100 Prospects – Preseason Rankings
August 29, 2023 by Logan Horn
Now that the 2023-24 NHL season is just around the corner, it’s time to update our ranking of the top 100 drafted NHL prospects. In the last year we’ve seen top prospects like Matty Beniers and Mason McTavish break into the NHL full-time, becoming important players for their respective teams. We’ve also seen prospects like David Jiricek, Brandt Clarke, and Shane Wright make their NHL debuts, despite not earning roles as NHL regulars quite yet.
The upcoming NHL rookie class is rightfully earning a lot of early attention, with a massive group of talented youngsters who each have a claim at the NHL’s Calder Memorial Trophy for the league’s best rookie. From Connor Bedard and Adam Fantilli to Logan Cooley and Luke Hughes, the NHL is going to see a massive influx of young talent this upcoming season. Before we get into the top 100 prospect ranking update, here are a few notes on the criteria and content of this list.
12 of the Fastest Skaters Ever in the NHL
April 10, 2023 by Josh Bell
The NHL is getting faster. Gone are the days when hitting and grinding are enough to compete in the best league in the world. Now, speed and skill reign supreme. For some players, this comes more naturally than others. Speed gives players a big advantage because of this. If no one can catch you, they can’t take the puck from you. With that in mind, let’s take a look back at some of the fastest players in NHL history (alphabetical order).
Longest NHL Games in the Post-Expansion Era
May 19, 2023 by Scott Roche
The atmosphere, the do-or-die mentality and, in the end, the reception of the most iconic trophy in sports: there’s nothing quite like playoff hockey. All the way from Game 1 of the first round to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, the drama never seems to cease, and nothing heightens that drama like overtime. In the past 90 years, players have gotten faster and more skilled. Due to this, games are often decided more efficiently, making even two or three overtime periods a rarity.
NHL’s Top 5 All-Time Indigenous Players
June 13, 2023 by Trege Wilson
The NHL has had 7,623 players suit up since it first started in 1917. Of those 7,000-plus players, only about 80 have been of Indigenous heritage, which makes up only 1.5 percent of the players in the NHL (From Recasting the History of Pro Hockey’s Indigenous Players, New York Times, June 25, 2018).
We hope you enjoyed today’s THW Substack, a Sunday from the Archives, and we hope you enjoy our experimenting with the THW Substack Sunday edition. Stay tuned for THW Daily as it continues tomorrow and beyond. Cheers!
