THW’s Best of the Week: Red Wings Sign Patrick Kane, Canucks Make Two Trades, Jarry's Goalie Goal & More
A Sunday Edition of The Hockey Writers Substack
Welcome to The Hockey Writers Sunday Edition…
Our in-season Sunday Edition features the BEST OF THE WEEK throughout the NHL.
In today’s edition, we have Patrick Kane signing with the Red Wings, two trades made by the Canucks, a goalie goal for Tristan Jarry, and much more.
Let’s dive into the Best of the Week…
Quite an Interesting Week in Red Wings Land
The Detroit Red Wings had quite the week. They signed future Hall of Fame winger Patrick Kane to a one-year deal and have won three of their last four games, including an overtime winner against the Montreal Canadiens. The Red Wings are 13-7-3 and in fourth place in the Atlantic Division.
Former NHL Referee Brian Murphy To Enter U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame
Brian Murphy spent 32 seasons as a linesman and referee in the NHL. He’s set to enter the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in Boston on Dec. 6.
He spent his entire career staying out of the spotlight, “You don’t get into officiating to be recognized,” Murphy said. “Anybody that does is in it for the wrong reason. So when you do get recognized, it’s kind of unexpected and it’s an overwhelming feeling, especially when you click on the (U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame) website and see the people that are in there. It’s a who’s who of U.S. hockey people, so to be included in something like that is unbelievable.” This is a well-deserved honor for Murphy.
Boston Bruins Get a Late Overtime Winner from Brad Marchand in Crazy Game
If anybody thought the Boston Bruins would slow down after winning the Presidents Trophy in the 2022-23 season, they were wrong. They won a thriller against the Toronto Maple Leafs and got a late game-winner from Brad Marchand to get their record to 16-4-3. Once again, head coach Jim Montgomery has the Bruins playing great regular-season hockey.
Blackhawks’ Connor Bedard Wins NHL Rookie of the Month in November
To the surprise of nobody, Chicago Blackhawks rookie Connor Bedard is the NHL’s November Rookie of the Month. The 2023 first-overall pick led all rookies in November with six goals and 12 points in 12 games. This is the first of many accolades to come for Bedard.
Canucks Manage Assets Well in Two Trades This Week
It’s a new era in Vancouver with general manager Pat Allvin taking over for Jim Benning in January 2022. The Canucks have been known in the past to not manage their assets as well as they could have, but some of that changed this week with their trading of Anthony Beauvillier to Chicago to clear cap space to add big defenseman Nikita Zadorov from the Calgary Flames for a couple of draft picks. This was a great week of trades for the Canucks.
Penguins Goaltender Tristan Jarry Scores a Goal against Lightning
Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry scored his first career goal in a win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. It was the 17th goalie goal in NHL history, it was also the first goalie goal in Penguins history.
