THW’s Best of the Week: Makar Makes History, Rangers Stay Hot, Bedard Scores a Beauty & More
A Sunday Edition of The Hockey Writers Substack
Welcome to The Hockey Writers Sunday Edition…
Our in-season Sunday Edition features the BEST OF THE WEEK throughout the NHL.
In today’s edition, we discuss the history made by defenseman Cale Makar, the New York Rangers’ hot streak, the beauty of a goal scored by Connor Bedard, and much more.
Let’s dive into the Best of the Week…
Avalanche’s Cale Makar Becomes Fastest Defenseman in NHL History To Reach 200 Assists
At just 25 years old, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar became the fastest defenseman in NHL history to reach 200 assists, doing so in 254 games. He’s accomplished a great deal in his career already and is well on his way to being one of the best defensemen of his era. He won the Norris Trophy in 2022, as well as the Conn Smythe and the Calder Trophy in 2020. He’s one of the best in the game.
Rangers Extend Point Streak to 11 Games After Thrilling Win Over Devils
The New York Rangers won their fourth straight game to extend their point streak to 11 games after a thrilling 5-3 victory in New Jersey. The Rangers are 10-0-1 in their last 11 games and 12-2-1 on the season, which is good enough for first place in the Metropolitan Division.
Blackhawks’ Connor Bedard Goes Top Shelf For a Beautiful Goal
Chicago Blackhawks rookie sensation Connor Bedard is living up to the hype in a big way. He scored a couple of filthy goals against the Florida Panthers this week, so it was hard to choose which one, but I’ll go with this nasty top-shelf goal off of a takeaway.

Kraken & Golden Knights Have 2024 Winter Classic Sweaters “Unveiled” in Weird Fashion
While the Seattle Kraken and Vegas Golden Knights have not officially unveiled their 2024 Winter Classic sweaters, they were unveiled in different ways. For the Kraken, it was players of the Utah Jazz in the NBA wearing them as they walked into the arena before a game. Then both sweaters were worn on an All Elite Wrestling broadcast. It’s safe to say that these are a couple of polarizing sweaters.
Capitals Finding Their Way After a Slow Start to the Season
The Washington Capitals are now 9-4-2 and in the midst of a four-game win streak. They were viewed as a possible rebuild candidate heading into the season and looked rough at the start, but they’ve been great since then. They’ve ridden the great play of goaltender Charlie Lindgren. It’ll be interesting to see if they can keep this level of play up in a wide-open Metropolitan Division.
Filip Forsberg Scores a Tremendous Goal for Nashville Predators
Nashville Predators sniper Filip Forsberg is one of the best in the game. He shows his skill with this ridiculous goal against the Anaheim Ducks. The presence of mind and hand-eye coordination it takes to pull this goal off is beyond words. Just a ridiculous play.
