THW's Sunday Substack - Best of the Week in the NHL
A Sunday Edition of The Hockey Writers Substack
Welcome to The Hockey Writers Sunday Edition
Our in-season Sunday Edition features the BEST OF THE WEEK throughout the NHL.
In today’s edition, we have a highlight reel goal scored by Connor McDavid, the scrappy start for the Arizona Coyotes, the St. Louis Blues Hall of Fame class of 2024, and much more.
It would be great if you’d share the THW Substack with your friends and family so that they can subscribe and enjoy every day.
Let’s dive into the Best of the Week…
Oilers’ Connor McDavid Scores Highlight Reel Goal
After somewhat of a slow start for Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers, they’ve since picked it up a bit, including a 6-1 win on the road over the Nashville Predators. In the game, McDavid scored a tremendous goal that most players would not be capable of pulling off. This happens all the time with McDavid. He's a special player. Hoping for the best after he went down an injury on Saturday night against the Winnipeg Jets. The league needs him healthy.
Alex Debrincat off to a Hot Start With Red Wings
One of the biggest trades of the summer came when the Ottawa Senators sent forward Alex DeBrincat to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for forward Dominik Kubalik, defenseman Donovan Sebrango, a conditional first-round draft pick, and a 2024 fourth-round pick.
The trade is paying early dividends for the Red Wings as they are 4-1-0 and DeBrincat has scored eight points in five games, including five goals. The Red Wings beat the Senators in DeBrincat’s return to Ottawa on Saturday.
Leo Carlsson Makes NHL Debut for Ducks
The Anaheim Ducks selected Leo Carlsson with the second overall pick in the 2023 Draft after Connor Bedard was taken first overall by the Chicago Blackhawks. Carlsson made his NHL debut on Thursday night against the Dallas Stars. Despite the loss, Carlsson scored a goal in the third period, which capped off an overly impressive debut for him. There’s a lot to be excited about in Anaheim with the number of high-level young players they have.
Coyotes Starting To Turn Heads With Early Play
The Arizona Coyotes have been in rebuild mode for the past few seasons, and it’s been somewhat extreme over the last two. However, they’ve been fun to watch this season. They are a young and competitive bunch off to a 3-2-0 start to the season, including wins over the New Jersey Devils, and Ducks, and a dominant win over the St. Louis Blues. Led by Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz, the Coyotes could be far more competitive than many expected entering the season. This is a fun group to watch. The goal shown below by Keller is part of why he’s a rising star in this league.
Blues Announce Hall of Fame Class for 2024
The Blues will induct three new members into their Hall of Fame on Friday, Jan. 19. Those members are Pavol Demitra, Keith Tkachuk, and Mike Liut.
The Blues Hall of Fame places great importance on the franchise and its history, “The Blues Hall of Fame was established in 2023 to pay homage to the franchise's great history and to honor special individuals who have made significant contributions to the Blues, both on and off the ice. The inaugural class included Red Berenson, Glenn Hall, Garry Unger and Scotty Bowman, along with the automatic inductions of the team's retired numbers (Bernie Federko, Bob Gassoff, Brett Hull, Al MacInnis, Barclay Plager, Bob Plager, Chris Pronger and Brian Sutter), broadcaster Dan Kelly, and the team's original owners, the Salomons.”
Jack Eichel Scores Beauty Amidst Golden Knights Elite Start
The Vegas Golden Knights have not suffered from a Stanley Cup hangover with a 6-0-0 start to the 2023-24 season. The same can be said for Jack Eichel, who has looked terrific in the team’s start to the season. In the midst of the elite start for Vegas, Eichel scored an absolute beauty of a goal against the Ducks. This is a must-see goal.
