Oilers Could Benefit From Broberg-for-Robertson Swap With Leafs
January 5, 2024 by Jesse Courville-Lynch
In December, the Edmonton Oilers granted young defenseman Philip Broberg the opportunity to speak with other teams around the NHL in hopes of facilitating a trade. Broberg has struggled to earn a full-time job on the Oilers and hasn’t stood out at either end of the ice when he’s been given the chance. He now finds himself playing with the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League (AHL) and will likely remain there until the Oilers grant his trade request.
Then there’s the Toronto Maple Leafs and forward Nick Robertson. Robertson hasn’t requested a trade or made any indication that he is unhappy with the organization and seems fine working with the team to continue his progress regardless of the number of times he’s been a healthy scratch. He was a top prospect for the Maple Leafs but some injury issues along with some confidence issues have hindered his development, and some think it may be time for the team to move on from that project.
Rangers’ Trade Targets to Add Muscle for the Postseason
January 5, 2024 by Tom Castro
If any doubt existed that the Metropolitan Division-leading New York Rangers need reinforcements in several areas, the Carolina Hurricanes put it to rest. A 6-1 rout of the team they’re chasing in the Metro on Jan. 2 likely only reinforced what Blueshirts general manager Chris Drury and coach Peter Laviolette already knew: Their roster will require upgrades between now and the March 8 trade deadline if the club hopes to make a deep postseason run.
Ignoring the desperate pleading from a not-so-small segment of the fan base to re-acquire a high-scoring but smallish right wing who’s now playing in the Motor City, it’s power the Rangers need up front, not more flash and dash. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the positives and negatives of some potential trade candidates who could provide the jagged edge missing from the roster – all of them pending unrestricted free agents, which has been Drury’s preference for deadline acquisitions the past two years as he contends with the Rangers’ tight salary-cap situation:
PWHL Inaugural Game Rakes in Canadian Viewers
January 5, 2024 by Andrew Forbes
It was a long-anticipated season opener, but as promised to its players, the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) got underway on New Year’s Day and what better way for the league to kick off the season than on the first day of 2024.
The inaugural game took place at the Mattamy Athletic Centre — the old Maple Leafs Garden — between Toronto and New York with New York winning 4-0 in the first shutout in PWHL history.
NHL Buyers & Sellers Taking Shape 2 Months From Deadline
January 5, 2024 by Alex Chauvancy
There’s still plenty of time until the trade deadline. But that doesn’t mean trades won’t begin to happen soon. The New York Islanders acquired Bo Horvat on Jan. 30 of last season, nearly a full month before the trade deadline.
With about half of the 2023-24 season completed, let’s look at who could be buyers and sellers at the March 8 trade deadline, plus teams on the fence.Â
US Wins 2024 WJC Gold Medal in Throttling of Sweden
January 5, 2024 by Daniel Amoia
Team USA headed into their gold medal matchup with Sweden in an attempt to cap off an undefeated tournament, as well as gain some revenge for their loss in the 2022 U18 Gold Medal matchup. As was evident from the beginning, their speed and talent prevailed, and the Americans were able to emerge victorious with a 6-2 victory. It marked their fourth gold medal in the last 12 tournaments.
Oilers Could Have 3 Deals In Back Pocket Ahead of Trade Deadline
January 5, 2024 by Jim Parsons
If the Edmonton Oilers wanted to make a trade, they probably could. But, the plan right now is likely to be patient as the team is on a nice little win streak and among the hottest teams in the NHL over the past 20 games. There are holes on the roster, including an obvious need to upgrade their goaltending and a possible need to bolster their blue line and forward depth. But, is going all in right now the right play?
GM Ken Holland hasn’t pulled the trigger on a deal. He may not. But, there are a few players on the roster who should be considered back-pocket moves that Holland can make, if desperate times call for desperate measures.
