Marner Drama May Drag Into Next Season and Get Ugly [Report]

Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek discussed the ongoing speculation surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs and Mitch Marner in their most recent episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast. Suggesting this situation won’t be resolved anytime soon, Friedman specifically expressed concern that negotiations between the two sides could drag out and carry over into next season, which would be problematic for a few reasons.

Canadiens’ Prospect Owen Beck Leads Saginaw to Memorial Cup Victory

The London Knights were heavily favoured to win the Memorial Cup last night, especially since they had eliminated the host team, the Saginaw Spirit, on their way to the Ontario Hockey League championship. The Knights had also booked their place in the final right away by beating everyone in the round-robin stage, but no tournament is played on paper or based on previous results. You’ve got to be the best team on the day, and last night, London just wasn’t. They gave Saginaw a good scare, but the host team’s game-winning goal with 22 seconds to go sealed their fate. It wasn’t the game-winning goal scorer that stole the show though, it was Montreal Canadiens’ prospect Owen Beck.

Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland has taken his share of lumps since taking the job and building a team he believed would be good enough to compete for a Stanley Cup. His detractors will say that he inherited the best group of young prospects in the NHL and did little to build around them, wasting some of Connor McDavid‘s best years. Others will suggest Holland has made as many good moves as he’s made bad ones. Still, there are three decisions Holland made, that at the time were considered a bit controversial. Many have paid off in spades.
Kings Must Trade Up to Draft Konsta Helenius

The Los Angeles Kings have found themselves in possession of a first-round pick for the first time since the 2021 Draft when they took Brandt Clarke. Under current management, the franchise has seen an influx of youth talent, but not many of their former top prospects have found success in the NHL. With the core aging and a dwindling prospect pool, the team can fix both of these issues by trading up in the draft to select Finnish star, Konsta Helenius.
