Red Wings’ Seider Has Contract Blueprint After Power’s Extension
October 15, 2023 by Logan Horn
Now that the 2023-24 season has officially begun, the clock is ticking on extensions for two of Detroit’s best young players, Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider. While Raymond has had an up-and-down journey in the NHL so far, Seider has been much more steady, looking the part of a really solid number one defender with enough offense to contribute on the top power play and enough defense to lead the team on the backend.
So what is Seider’s next deal going to look like? Will the Red Wings try to sign him to a short-term bridge deal to make sure they know what kind of player he is or to make sure they know how high the salary cap is going to rise over the next few seasons? Will they sign him long term this year, likely overpaying a bit for the first year or two before seeing tons of surplus value as Seider matures into his prime and the salary cap continues to rise?
Sharks’ Filip Zadina Working to Revive His Career
October 15, 2023 by Andrew Stille
The San Jose Sharks have begun the 2023-24 regular season, and unfortunately, it began the way many were expecting. The Sharks took on the Vegas Golden Knights, and they struggled to keep up with the reigning Stanley Cup champions. By the conclusion of the third period, Vegas walked away with a 4-1 victory. However, not all was as doom and gloom as it seemed. Amidst the struggles, one player stood out: Filip Zadina.
While the Sharks walked away from their season opener with a loss, their lone goal came from Zadina, who the Sharks picked up in free agency after he was bought out by the Detroit Red Wings. The former sixth-overall pick may not have panned out in Detroit, but it looks like his time in San Jose may already be off on the right foot. However, with the majority of the season remaining, he still has a lot to prove.
Blue Jackets Adding Garland Would Only Create Another Problem
October 15, 2023 by William Espy
The Columbus Blue Jackets were linked to Vancouver Canucks forward Conor Garland by Elliotte Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada. Although on paper it would seem to make sense, as Vancouver is looking for a defenseman in return and the Blue Jackets need to move one; it would only create more problems.
The Blue Jackets also have too many forwards on the brink of making the NHL and despite Garland being a solid middle-six winger, his contract and the lack of roster space make him unnecessary.
Blackhawks News & Rumors: Seabrook, Hall, Perry & More
October 15, 2023 by Gail Kauchak
The Chicago Blackhawks 2023-24 season is in full swing, and there’s a lot of excitement and anticipation surrounding the team. They’re currently on a five-game road trip to start their campaign. While their record reflects a not-so-thrilling 1-2-0 start, it’s going to be an eventful season for the Blackhawks. With that in mind, let’s get to some of the latest news and rumors from this first week of the season.
Top 10 Dirtiest NHL Players
October 14, 2023 by Eugene Helfrick
Hockey is played hard and fast. Athletes will hook, trip, face wash and pester to gain a winning edge. Like all sports, hockey has official rules and unwritten rules. It also has a code of respect. And there are many players that blur the lines between the two. Or cross them entirely. They can be downright dirty.
These dirty, unsportsmanlike, and sometimes dishonorable players take every liberty they can on vulnerable players. They’re seemingly incapable of delivering clean body checks on a regular basis. They take cheap shots, run smaller players, and blindside unsuspecting peers, igniting an intense and impassioned hatred. In short, they have earned their spots on our list of the most hated players in the NHL.
Matthews Joins Elite Club of 300 Goals in 500 (or Fewer) Games
October 14, 2023 by The Old Prof
On Wednesday, Oct. 11, in a thrilling 6-5 shootout win, the Toronto Maple Leafs came back to beat the Montreal Canadiens. Trailing 5-3 with under five minutes remaining in the third period, the Maple Leafs pulled their goalie and kept hammering at Canadiens’ goalie Jake Allen until they scored one goal. Continuing their onslaught, with time ticking away, the Maple Leafs scored another goal to tie the game. With Mitch Marner potting the only goal in the shootout, they came back to win the game.
What I didn’t mention here is that three of the Maple Leafs goals were scored by Auston Matthews. His hat trick goals were numbers 300, 301, and 302. With those goals, scored in his 482nd game, Matthews entered an elite club of NHL players. This club is made up of players who have scored 300 goals in fewer than 500 games. Matthews is now the 14th player in NHL history to have accomplished this feat. In this post, I’ll share more about the players who make up this list.
