Over the last few seasons, the Carolina Hurricanes have had one of the best defensive units in the NHL. When a defense that includes the names of Jaccob Slavin, Brent Burns, Dougie Hamilton, Brett Pesce, etc. it is no surprise that the Hurricanes will usually be top five in the league. Almost every defenseman on their roster could be considered top-four, and one player in particular, Jalen Chatfield, has made himself a mainstay in the lineup.
Examining the Hurricanes’ New-Look Power Play

Training Camp is officially underway, and the rosters have been set. The Carolina Hurricanes roster is set in stone for the most part, but a strong showing at the prospect showcase may say otherwise. It is intriguing to see which guys showcase their abilities and make it tough on the coaches not to give them a roster spot. As for those who likely have a solidified roster spot, there is a new-look power play (PP) in Raleigh this upcoming season. It is an area that needs improving, and this unit could be a reason why it does.

This offseason has been great for the Carolina Hurricanes. General manager Don Waddell did everything he could to reinforce the roster with impactful talent. Many big names are making their way into Raleigh, such as Michael Bunting and Dmitry Orlov. As important as those big names are, there are players on the roster that will be overlooked because of it. Hurricanes’ Ponomarev Has Earned Opening Night Roster Spot

The Carolina Hurricanes’ 23-man roster is set in stone, for the most part. A couple of roster spots are still up for grabs as the team started the on-ice portion of training camp on Thursday. Goaltending seems to be the position where there won’t be any question marks. On the defense, it may come down to the final defensive pairing, more or less. However, upfront, there are one or two spots on the fourth line and even some depth roles to fill. One player who has a strong case to make the roster and maybe even earn the starting fourth-line center position is Moskva, Russia native Vasily Ponomarev.

The Carolina Hurricanes are one of the favorites going into the 2023-24 NHL season. With a roster full of budding young talent, multiple major free-agent additions, and the best depth of any NHL team, this team is on the verge of collecting Lord Stanley. Whether it is openly gushing about the strength of the Hurricanes’ backend or appreciating the great players the Canes have among their forward core, there remain holes in the best of squads in this league. Those Hurricanes are not an exception.
