3 Flames Who Need to Step Up in 2023-24
September 1, 2023, by Ryan Ventura
After a hectic offseason, the Calgary Flames are just over a month away from kicking off their 2023-24 campaign. The new-look team is hoping to bounce back after a letdown of a season that saw them miss the 2023 NHL Playoffs. There will undoubtedly be some growing pains towards the start of the season, as they are being led by a new head coach and saw considerable roster turnover this offseason.
Flames Have Real Shot at Winning Stanley Cup This Season
September 2, 2023, by Rupert McDonald
The Calgary Flames don’t have much expectations to live up to after a disappointing 2022-23 season. That may be a good thing, as they were thought of as potential Stanley Cup contenders at this time last year and wound up missing the playoffs by two points.
Despite their much lower expectations this season, this roster boasts plenty of talent. They have some great offensive producers up front in players like Jonathan Huberdeau, some very good two-way guys in Elias Lindholm, Nazem Kadri, and Andrew Mangiapane, and several solid defencemen including MacKenzie Weegar, Rasmus Andersson, and Noah Hanifin. In net, they have a goalie who finished as a Vezina finalist just two seasons ago in Jacob Markstrom.
Flames Should Consider Bringing in Phil Kessel This Season
September 5, 2023, by Rupert McDonald
As the Calgary Flames prepare to begin the 2023-24 season, there are still some questions as to what their opening night roster will look like. With the Darryl Sutter/Brad Treliving regime out, there is a good opportunity for some younger players in the system to crack the lineup out of training camp this fall.
While giving these young players an opportunity is a great idea, this is a roster that, at this point, is still built to compete. If they have success in the early going of the 2023-24 campaign, the chances of being able to re-sign several of their pending unrestricted free agents (UFA) will increase dramatically.
Flames’ Sharangovich Will Prove to be Worth Trading Toffoli
September 6, 2023, by Rupert McDonald
When the Calgary Flames announced that they had traded Tyler Toffoli to the New Jersey Devils in late June, fans were not happy. Toffoli was quickly becoming a fan favourite in what was his first full season in Cowtown and led the team in scoring last season with 34 goals and 73 points.
Why exactly the trade happened depends on who you talk to. Toffoli himself has said that he wanted to stay but received very little talk in regard to an extension, which resulted in him requesting a trade. Management has instead made it seem like they would have liked to keep him around but were unable to work out a deal. Regardless of how it all went down, Toffoli is now a Devil, while Yegor Sharangovich is a Flame.
