A Sunday Edition of The Hockey Writers Substack
Welcome to The Hockey Writers Sunday Edition…
Our in-season Sunday Edition features the BEST OF THE WEEK throughout the NHL.
In today’s edition, we have 2024 WJC rosters for the U.S. and Canada, a weird week for Blues forward Jordan Kyrou, goaltender Roberto Luongo into Canucks Ring of Honor, and much more.
Let’s dive into the Best of the Week…
Tomas Tatar Traded by Colorado Avalanche to Seattle Kraken
The Colorado Avalanche sent forward Tomas Tatar to the Seattle Kraken in a trade on Friday, Dec. 15. With Jaden Schwartz on LTIR for the Kraken, Tatar will step in and try to produce for the club. He had nine points in 27 games for the Avalanche.
United States and Canada Announce 2024 WJC Rosters
With the 2024 World Junior Championships heading to Sweden from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5, both the USA and Canada have announced their rosters. Amongst the interesting notes are returning goaltender Trey Augustine for the USA and the likes of defenseman Ryan Chesley, defenseman Lane Hutson, forward Cutter Gauthier, and others returning to lead the way. As for Canada, college phenom Macklin Celebrini and several first-round picks (Nate Danielson, Conor Geekie, Brayden Yager, etc.) will lead the way.
Blues’ Kyrou Has Redemption Game After Fans Boo Him
After the firing of head coach Craig Berube, St. Louis Blues forward Jordan Kyrou was asked to give his thoughts on the move, and said "I've got no comment. He's not my coach anymore."
This led to Blues fans booing him throughout their next game and it was tough for him. However, he responded on Saturday night against the Dallas Stars and had three points in the 4-3 win, including a helper on the overtime winner.

Capitals Have Interest in Proposed Virginia Arena
According to reports and NHL.com, the Capitals could very well be on their way to Virginia.
This sums it up well, “Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis and Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin announced Wednesday that Monumental Sports & Entertainment has reached the framework for an agreement to move the Capitals into a new state-of-the-art arena and entertainment district to be built at Potomac Yard in Alexandria by 2028.” This $2 billion project would give the Capitals and Wizards an arena in VA.
Roberto Luongo Inducted into Vancouver Canucks Ring of Honor
Prior to their game on Thursday, Dec. 14, the Vancouver Canucks inducted goaltender Roberto Luongo into the franchise’s Ring of Honor. He was also an inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022. It’s a well-deserved honor for the former netminder, who had 252 wins in eight seasons with the Canucks.
Predators’ Tomasino Scores Big Goal on a Breakaway
Nashville Predators forward Philip Tomasino has been snakebitten this season. He had just one goal entering their game against the Capitals. However, he got another goal on the board with a beauty on a breakaway. An important goal for the young forward.
