THW's Best of the Week: Crosby's 1,200th NHL Game, Canucks' Great Start & More
A Sunday Edition of The Hockey Writers Substack
Welcome to The Hockey Writers Sunday Edition…
Our in-season Sunday Edition features the BEST OF THE WEEK throughout the NHL.
In today’s edition, we have thoughts on Sidney Crosby’s career after he played in his 1,200th NHL game, the Canucks’ brilliant start, a great start for Ryan O'Reilly in Nashville, and much more.
Let’s dive into the Best of the Week…
Penguins’ Sidney Crosby Plays in 1,200th NHL Game
Talk about living up to the hype. The first overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft, Sidney Crosby, has had one of the greatest careers of all time. He’s won three Stanley Cups, two Art Ross trophies, two Hart trophies, and much more. He’s tallied over 500 goals and 1,500 points. On top of that, he’s still a tremendously effective player for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Congrats to “Sid the Kid” on his 1,200th NHL game.
Canucks Look Like One of the Best Teams in the West
In the first full season under head coach Rick Tocchet, the Vancouver Canucks look like one of the best teams in the Western Conference as the calendar flips to November. They entered last night’s game against the Dallas Stars with the best goal differential in the league by five goals.
Ryan O’Reilly Thriving in First Season With Nashville Predators
In the summer, center Ryan O’Reilly signed a four-year deal with the Nashville Predators worth $4.4 million per season. After a tough offensive season in 2022-23, he’s returned to form in 11 games for Nashville, scoring seven goals and 11 points overall. He had a hat trick in the Predators win over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, Nov. 4.

Blues’ Jordan Kyrou Scores 200th NHL Point
Despite a slow statistical start for Jordan Kyrou this season, he took his game up a notch in the St. Louis Blues’ 6-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens with three points. His assist on a Brayden Schenn goal that made it 3-1 Blues was Kyrou’s 200th point in his 262nd NHL game. He’s too much of a dynamic talent to not find the score sheet. It’ll be interesting to see if this performance builds some confidence for him.
Tage Thompson’s Has Taken Two-Way Game up a Notch This Season
After being one of the top breakout superstars last season, Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson has taken his two-way game up a notch this season. He’s got a great stick and a big body to throw weight around on the ice. He’s played a key role on the Sabres’ penalty skill, which entered Saturday night as the fifth-best in the league. He was persistent in this shorthanded goal that he scored against the Maple Leafs.
We hope you enjoyed today’s THW Substack, and we hope you enjoy our “Best of the Week” Sunday Edition. Stay tuned for THW Daily as it continues tomorrow and beyond. Cheers!
