Maple Leafs Gameday Preview: Chicago Blackhawks – 10/16/23

It is Toronto Maple Leafs game day, and the boys in blue will look to win their third straight to start the season. William Nylander and Auston Matthews have been buzzing in their first two games, with eight goals combined in six periods.
Matthews is only the fifth player in NHL history to start the season with back-to-back hat tricks and the first to do it since Alex Ovechkin in 2017-18. Before that, Cy Denneny, Joe Malone, and Reg Noble all did it in 1917-18.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have kicked off their 2023–24 season with two straight wins that have brought hockey fans back to the late 1980s with the number of goals scored in the games. The team offensively appears to be running like a well-oiled machine. Auston Matthews and William Nylander have scored eight goals in six periods for the Maple Leafs, and the whole forward group is firing. However, defensively, this team needs work.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are viewed as being one of the top teams in the NHL this season. So far, they have been living up to expectations in this short season, as they have won their first two games. Due to this, they will likely be active buyers at the 2024 Trade Deadline and make changes to their group in the process. However, these Maple Leafs players will, without a doubt, not be traded during the season.

Off to a two-game mini win streak to ring in the 2023-24 season, it’s easy to get lost in the positives that we’ve seen from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Obviously the four points early in the season are nice — add to that the milestone for Auston Matthews and his six goals in two games and things seem to be pretty good in Maple Leaf land.
