Sharks’ Bizarre Tomas Hertl Trade Changes Team’s Direction
March 9, 2024 by Alex Hutton
The entire hockey world knew that the San Jose Sharks would be making some moves at the trade deadline this season. But far fewer people knew that they would make one of the strangest and most unexpected trades in recent history, sending forward Tomas Hertl to the Vegas Golden Knights in a deal that totaled five assets. From San Jose’s perspective, this move is unbelievably confusing. They unloaded a critical player, received shockingly little in return, and completely reset the picture of their rebuild to something far muddier and more abstract. Let’s not mince words — the more the details of this trade get examined under the microscope, the worse they become for the Sharks.
Devils and Sharks Swap Goaltenders at Trade Deadline
March 8, 2024 by Justin Giampietro
On March 8, the San Jose Sharks dealt goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen to the New Jersey Devils in a one-for-one goalie swap to acquire Vitek Vanecek. It’s no secret that New Jersey has been struggling with goaltending all season long, so they went out and got another one on top of Jake Allen. In the final season of a $2.75 million contract, the Devils will have to extend Kahkonen to retain his rights next season. Otherwise, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.
Grading the Golden Knights Blockbuster Trade for Hertl

Well now, if you thought this was going to be a slow trade deadline, the Vegas Golden Knights just reminded us all that the salary cap is simply a state of mind. In what can only be described as a true blockbuster deal, Vegas acquired Tomas Hertl, a 2025 third-round pick, and a 2027 third-round pick from the San Jose Sharks for a 2025 first-round pick and David Edstrom. As part of the trade, San Jose will retain 17 percent of Hertl’s contract to make the cap situation work for Vegas.
Golden Knights Acquire Tomas Hertl From Sharks
March 8, 2024 by Justin Giampietro
In a late-deadline blockbuster, the San Jose Sharks sent 30-year-old center Tomas Hertl, a 2025 third-round pick, and a 2027 third-round pick to the Vegas Golden Knights for a 2025 first-round pick and prospect David Edstrom. Hertl’s contract comes at 17 percent retention, putting him at $6.75 million each season.
Sharks: Duclair’s Final Game Summarized Season as a Whole
March 8, 2024 by William Espy
With 7:15 remaining in the third period on Tuesday (March 5) night, the San Jose Sharks had a 6-3 lead. Anthony Duclair had four points on the night, two goals, and two assists, and everything seemed to be heading toward an impressive victory for the team in teal. It seemed clear that it was going to be Duclair’s last game with the team due to the rapidly approaching trade deadline, and there would’ve been no better way to send him out than with a convincing win over a Stanley Cup-contending team right?
Grading the Lightning’s Trade for Anthony Duclair
March 8, 2024 by Eugene Helfrick
Despite being a team on the fringe of the NHL Playoffs, the Tampa Bay Lightning still see themselves as a true threat to win the Stanley Cup, so it should come as no surprise that they bolstered their roster at the 2024 Trade Deadline. Instead of going all in with a blockbuster move, however, this season general manager Julien BriseBois took a simpler approach by acquiring Anthony Duclair and a 2025 7th-round pick from the San Jose Sharks for a 2024 third-round pick and defensive prospect Jack Thompson.
