Alex Meruelo started his press conference with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman by tripping over a light in front of the stand. It wasn’t a fantastic outing for the former Arizona Coyotes owner as he made his first public appearance since 2019 when he first bought the team. Many wanted answers for where he’s been, why he hasn’t been talking, what’s happening now, and other pressing topics and there weren’t a lot of great responses by Meruelo. Here are some takeaways from Friday’s press conference.

The Arizona Coyotes have dealt with countless issues during their time in Arizona. First and foremost is their on-ice success, which has evidently been lacking. They’ve only made the playoffs a handful of times, their longest run coming in 2012, which saw them lose to the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference Final, who eventually went on to win the Stanley Cup. More recently, they made it during the 2020 COVID-19 bubble in Edmonton. Still, after defeating the Nashville Predators in the play-in round, they were taken care of in five games by the Colorado Avalanche in Round 1.

It’s official. The Arizona Coyotes are no more. The team has been sold to Ryan Smith, who will relocate the team to Salt Lake City, Utah, effective immediately. Here are things you need to know about the relocation.

For the past 28 years, the franchise has called the Grand Canyon State home.
