The Carolina Hurricanes finished their six-game road trip in Tampa against the Lightning on Tuesday, Oct. 24. Coming into the game it was unclear who would be dressing for the Hurricanes. Carolina recently recalled Dylan Coghlan from the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Springfield Thunderbirds due to Brett Pesce still being out due to injury. However, they were able to get Sebastian Aho and Frederik Andersen back for the game.
Aho would be slotted on the first-line left wing spot while Andersen was the backup to starter Pyotr Kochetkov. While it was good to see some of the injured guys back, the loss of Pesce and Andrei Svechnikov was felt in this game.
Carolin would ultimately lose 3-0 to the Lightning to fall 3-4 on the young 2023-24 season. What were the takeaways from the game? Let’s take a look:
Sebastian Aho is back after missing the last three games
Pyotr Kochetkov looked solid in his second straight start, none of the goals were on him
Seth Jarvis and Jesperi Kotkaniemi with the best chances to score all night
Hurricanes outshot the Lightning 33-23 but shutout 3-0
Hurricanes power-play was 0-for-4 while the penalty kill went 3-for-4 on the night
Carolina falls to 3-4 and the first time under .500 since Dec. 31, 2018
The 33 shots seem high but the chances were few and far between for the most part. Quantity over quality for the Hurricanes tonight. The puck luck was not there as there were many whiffs and the puck jumping over & off sticks all night. It was just not their night.
Overall, there was some effort but the Hurricanes could not figure out the Lightning’s goaltender Jonas Johansson as he shut them out stopping all 33 shots faced. After the third Lightning goal, Dmitry Orlov was assessed a double-minor for roughing and given a 10-minute misconduct while Brendan Lemieux was given a 10-minute misconduct from the bench.
It is clear that the team is frustrated and is hoping to turn it around at home on Thursday.
