Spooner Leads PWHL Toronto to 4-1 Win vs. Minnesota
February 3, 2024 by Justin Giampietro
In just their second regulation loss of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season, formerly league-leading PWHL Minnesota fell to formerly league-worst PWHL Toronto on the road in a sweet upset, serving as a huge statement for the latter squad. Goaltender Kristen Campbell had herself a wonderful afternoon, while forward Natalie Spooner had two goals and an assist in the win — both helped lead Toronto to their win. What were some takeaways?
Hockey Is Broken. Maybe the PWHL Can Fix It

I was watching the coverage of the PWHL Showcase during the 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend, and a lightning bolt struck me. During the pre-game interviews, PWHL Montreal’s Laura Stacey was being interviewed. In the course of the interview, it was mentioned that she would be facing her fiance, Marie-Philip Poulin, in the Showcase game.
It was just mentioned as a matter of fact. Teammates on PWHL Montreal, Poulin and Stacey are going to be facing each other in the All-Star matchup. The fact that they are engaged to be married was just an interesting twist to the game.
Now, imagine that scenario for the NHL All-Star game. Two players engaged to each other, playing on different teams in the game. Yeah, I’m guessing it wouldn’t be treated as matter-of-factly.

It was a quick 20-minute game with two ten-minute halves, and to start, we’ll take a look at the members of each team.

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is just about a month in, and there’s been a lot of action so far. PWHL Minnesota has been showing their talents, and despite some close losses, they are getting results. Many of their players are well-known around the state of Minnesota, but a couple of them have really made names for themselves so far this season.

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) does not resume play until Feb. 3, and PWHL Boston does not until Feb. 4. The break, now that we have a decent six-game sample size, is a good time to analyze Boston’s play to date.
