Sharks Can Solidify Defensive Prospect Pool in 2024 Draft
The San Jose Sharks won the Draft Lottery and will have the honor of selecting Macklin Celebrini first overall, but they also have a second first round pick.
On Tuesday night, the San Jose Sharks were announced as the winners of the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery, meaning for the first time in franchise history they’ll have the honor of picking first overall during this summer’s NHL Draft. Their prospect pool already has some high-end forwards, including Will Smith, Quentin Musty, Filip Bystedt, and Thomas Bordeleau who can all become impact players at the NHL level at some point.
Adding the consensus projected first overall pick, Macklin Celebrini to the mix will undoubtedly help the rebuild and that’s not the only important piece of news the Sharks got that night either.
A Second First-Round Pick
Entering the night, the Sharks were guaranteed to have their own first-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, but there was also the possibility that they could get the Pittsburgh Penguins’ pick due to the Erik Karlsson trade this past summer. If it was a top-ten pick, Penguins’ General Manager Kyle Dubas would’ve had the option to keep this season’s draft pick and send their 2025 first-rounder to the Sharks instead.
