When J.T. Miller walked away from the Vancouver Canucks for personal reasons last season, he was praised for being confident and self-aware enough to prioritize his well-being. NHL analyst Jeff Marek praised Miller’s courage, suggesting future NHL players might feel the courage to do the same when needed. While the idea of mental health is important, looking back, the fallout in Vancouver suggests Miller's decision may have been extremely harmful to the Canucks.

Months later, it's now clear Miller's leaving was about more than Miller just looking after his own well-being. There was real tension in Vancouver between Miller and Elias Pettersson, with pressure to fix a relationship that was never great, but had badly broken down. Things were no longer fixable and Miller took a break, likely at the request of the organization.

He returned, but was ultimately traded when it was clear he and Pettersson were never going to get back on the same page. It worked out well for Miller, who moved on to a less dramatic situation and a familiar setting with the Rangers. For the Canucks, Miller’s departure set off a domino effect.

Things Went From Bad to Worse for the Canucks After Miller's Exit

Losing Miller wasn't just a blow to the Canucks on the ice, even though they missed his production. The Canucks struggled without his intensity and leadership (which he was initially criticized for), and star forward Elias Pettersson took much of the criticism for the team’s underwhelming 2024-25 campaign.
