NHL Hall of Famer Joe Sakic never delivered much in the way of on-ice heartbreak to the New York Rangers, the star center spending 13 of his 20 NHL seasons in the Western Conference and thus mostly facing them sparingly during the regular season. In his only playoff matchup with the Blueshirts, Sakic’s top-seeded Quebec Nordiques were stunned in the opening round in six games in 1995 by the defending Stanley Cup champion, Mark Messier-led Rangers.

The New York Rangers look to be entering the 2024-25 season with the majority of their roster still in place from the team that got knocked out in the Eastern Conference Final against the eventual-Stanley-Cup-champion Florida Panthers. This means they are going to need to rely on their younger players once again to take another step in their development in order to help the team take the next step in getting a Stanley Cup back to New York. These younger players are Alexis Lafreniere, Filip Chytil and Kaapo Kakko.

The last big-name free agent for the 2024 offseason went off the board after Vladimir Tarasenko signed a two-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings. That means we can now safely look at the best and worst UFA contracts handed out this summer, and there were plenty of them. While some NHL teams seem to be getting smarter in free agency, there were still some pretty questionable contracts handed out in the first week of free agency. Let’s look at the eight worst.
