PWHL Postseason Could Contain Surprises
With three points for a win, there are teams that may have a chance at the postseason yet.
With the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) postseason just around the corner, it's time to talk about how wide open the race still is despite teams only having three or four games remaining. How is it possible that the bottom team in the league still has a chance to claim a spot in the postseason? The 3-2-1 points system, that’s how. While the NHL has not adopted the system, the PWHL is seeing great success in its first season.
Some may prefer to have a clear-cut top seed and bottom seed, but I love that even the bottom team, PWHL New York, who has 20 points with four games left, can climb their way into a postseason spot; however, they’d have to win all four games to make that happen, and others would have to lose. PWHL Boston, who’s in fifth place with 28 points and three games left, could climb into an even higher postseason spot than PWHL New York if they won all three remaining games and the teams above them lost their remaining games.
PWHL Toronto is the only team to clinch its spot in the postseason, currently in number one, but that could change as PWHL Minnesota, and PWHL Montrêal are tied for second place, just three points or one win behind PWHL Toronto. That leaves PWHL Ottawa, which beat PWHL Minnesota 4-0 in its first game back from the pause, just five points back in fourth place.
