Calvin Pickard was the starting goalie for the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night in Game 4. Down 2-1 in their series, this wasn’t a must-win, but it’s as close as the Oilers would get before every loss could mean elimination. Pickard has never started an NHL playoff game, but head coach Kris Knoblauch seems to have seen enough during the regular season that he feels comfortable with the change.

There had been nothing else during the 2011-12 season to get excited about with an Oilers team that finished with the NHL’s second-worst record. Once Edmonton was awarded the first overall pick by winning the draft lottery, anticipation reached a new feverish level.

Aside from the two-headed monster of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the Oilers have done well filling out the rest of their lineup with strong pieces, including Zach Hyman, Mattias Ekholm, and Evander Kane, who have all been huge parts of the Oilers’ playoff success in the past several seasons.Â
