Cotter’s Third-Period Heroics Elevate Golden Knights Over Flyers

The Vegas Golden Knights managed to keep their historic start alive on Tuesday by defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in regulation at T-Mobile Arena to extend their winning streak and bring their record to a perfect 7-0-0. The Golden Knights are just the 16th team all-time to win their opening seven games of a season and are now just one of three teams who remain undefeated (Colorado Avalanche, Boston Bruins). They continue to prove why they should be one of the favorites to make another Stanley Cup run.
Golden Knights’ Goaltending & Depth Spark Historic 6-0 Start

Earlier this month, I acknowledged the difficulty of defending a Stanley Cup title. Apparently, no one mentioned that to the Vegas Golden Knights, who have cruised to an undefeated 6-0 start, the best start by a reigning champion in league history. On one hand, it shouldn’t be surprising to see a defending champion carry their dominance into the next season.
On the other hand, this is a veteran team with a checkered injury history that lost a key forward (Reilly Smith) and could have been expected to ease into things following a grueling playoff run in 2022-23. Here are some of the reasons why that hasn’t been the case:

The expansion and entry drafts of that year paved the way for the tremendous success the franchise has experienced early in its history. Then-general manager George McPhee made a number of moves to acquire multiple draft picks in that 2017 draft and build from the ground up. In the seasons since, they have moved a lot of their future assets for stars, but the team had a total of 12 draftees in their first draft and a number of them are starting to pay dividends. Here is a look at the first 12 draft picks in Golden Knights history.
