Oilers News & Rumors: McDavid Talk, Key Wins, & Goalie Rumors
January 6, 2024 by Jim Parsons
In an Edmonton Oilers news and rumors update, Connor McDavid talks about the upcoming All-Star changes, as well as the work the team still has to do get back into the playoff mix. That will start on Saturday against the Ottawa Senators. Meanwhile, there is talk about a slight shift in focus when it comes to a goaltender trade, and one analyst points out something key about the way the team is winning games.
Oilers Benefiting From Light NHL Schedule
January 6, 2024 by Dale Bochon
Despite a slow start to the 2023-24 NHL season, the Edmonton Oilers find themselves in a good position as the schedule moves into mid-January. Ideally they’re not where they want to be, but they’ve definitely been trending upward since Kris Knoblauch and Paul Coffey took over the coaching duties back in early November.
Much credit should go to both Knoblauch and Coffey, but some could go to the NHL schedule maker.
Oilers: 4 Players Who Could Be Voted to the 2024 All-Star Game
January 6, 2024 by Brian Swane
On Thursday (Jan. 4), the NHL announced the first 32 of 44 players who will participate next month at NHL All-Star Weekend in Toronto. The league’s Hockey Operations Departments selected one player from each team, with Connor McDavid getting the nod to represent the Edmonton Oilers.
The remaining 12 players will be decided by fan vote. From now through Thursday (Jan. 11), votes can be cast on the league’s website and app, as well as X (formerly Twitter).
Oilers Could Have 3 Deals In Back Pocket Ahead of Trade Deadline
January 5, 2024 by Jim Parsons
If the Edmonton Oilers wanted to make a trade, they probably could. But, the plan right now is likely to be patient as the team is on a nice little win streak and among the hottest teams in the NHL over the past 20 games. There are holes on the roster, including an obvious need to upgrade their goaltending and a possible need to bolster their blue line and forward depth. But, is going all in right now the right play?
GM Ken Holland hasn’t pulled the trigger on a deal. He may not. But, there are a few players on the roster who should be considered back-pocket moves that Holland can make, if desperate times call for desperate measures.
Oilers Could Benefit From Broberg-for-Robertson Swap With Leafs
January 5, 2024 by Jesse Courville-Lynch
In December, the Edmonton Oilers granted young defenseman Philip Broberg the opportunity to speak with other teams around the NHL in hopes of facilitating a trade. Broberg has struggled to earn a full-time job on the Oilers and hasn’t stood out at either end of the ice when he’s been given the chance. He now finds himself playing with the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League (AHL) and will likely remain there until the Oilers grant his trade request.
Then there’s the Toronto Maple Leafs and forward Nick Robertson. Robertson hasn’t requested a trade or made any indication that he is unhappy with the organization and seems fine working with the team to continue his progress regardless of the number of times he’s been a healthy scratch. He was a top prospect for the Maple Leafs but some injury issues along with some confidence issues have hindered his development, and some think it may be time for the team to move on from that project.
Oilers vs Senators Pre-Game
The Edmonton Oilers are riding high on a wave of success as they welcome the Ottawa Senators to Rogers Place. Fresh off a convincing 5-2 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Oilers are in peak form, having secured wins in six consecutive games and boasting an impressive 10-6-1 record on home ice.
Can they keep their hot streak going versus a team they should beat?
