The 2024 NHL offseason isn’t over and there’s still lots of time to conduct business, but it is strange to see a handful of names still unsigned as training camps aren’t far off.

UFAs and RFAs are still working on contract talks or waiting, while some players who were expected to sign extensions haven’t yet.

Here are some of the most surprising names who surprisingly haven’t landed a new deal yet.

Jeremy Swayman

An RFA for the Boston Bruins, it’s starting to look like the organization made a mistake not inking Swayman to a new deal before trading Linus Ullmark. Swayman might be an RFA, but he’s got some leverage and the latest rumor is that he’s asking for as much as $10 million per season.

The Bruins maintain their public stance that a deal will get done. Most insiders believe it will too. But, the longer this takes, the more it looks like Swayman wants to be among the highest-paid goalies in the NHL.

Max Pacioretty

Rumors are circulating this week that the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings might be interested in Max Pacioretty. Nick Alberga posted on Thursday, “…Sources confirm the Maple Leafs are among the teams firmly in the mix to sign veteran UFA forward Max Pacioretty.” David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period added, “Hearing same re Leafs/Pacioretty. This would be a SPC (standard player contract), not a PTO, if they agree to terms.”

Pacioretty is trying to land a deal after several injury-plagued seasons and some lower production in 2023-24. He could pan out to be a great gamble. If he can produce at league minimum, he’s got a history of scoring.
