Minnesota Wild Need To Think Before Re-Signing Fleury
While Fleury is a soon to be Hall of Fame goaltender, is he right for the Wild's future?
A few weeks ago, I talked about how Marc-André Fleury deserved a postseason run, even if it meant he wasn’t with the Minnesota Wild anymore. Well, he stuck around, and as of now, unless the Wild go on an eight-game win streak and the teams ahead of them lose all of their remaining games, the Wild are on the outside looking in for the first time since the 2018-19’. Fleury wanted to stick it out, but unfortunately, he will miss the postseason for the first time in 17 years; he’s made the postseason every season going back to 2006-07’.
Now that the Wild are basically out of the postseason, barring a miracle, there are talks of the offseason regarding who will stay and who will go. There’s been recent talk that the Wild should re-sign Fleury for one more year, as he’s been quoted as “Minnesota or retirement.” While I would love to keep him for his personality and play, they must consider this.
I know Fleury has become one of the team's faces because he’s a guy everyone loves, and he’s played out of his mind for an almost 40-year-old goaltender. There aren’t many players over the age of 39 in the NHL, and for goaltenders, Fleury is the oldest. Remarkably, he can play like he does at his age, but should the Wild hold on to him?
