If There's One Thing We Know About McDavid... He's Dug In
The Oilers' captain is standing his ground on taking his time and wanting to win.
Connor McDavid’s contract status has dominated headlines this summer, but the truth is far less dramatic than rumor mills suggest. Despite outside noise and the extensive media coverage outlining several different scenarios that, if things suddenly pivot, there has been no indication that McDavid wants to leave.
As TSN’s Craig Button put it, “I wouldn’t be worried if I were the Edmonton Oilers fans. I think he’s fully committed to the Oilers… he’s dug in with the Edmonton Oilers and he’s shown, totally, that he wants to do everything he can to deliver a Stanley Cup.”
But McDavid is also dug in regarding his contract situation.

What Does It Mean That McDavid is Dug In?
That phrase — “dug in” — captures McDavid perfectly.
He’s entrenched in his commitment to winning in Edmonton, especially after the team failed to do so in two consecutive trips to the Stanley Cup Final. He set out to prove this Oilers team could get over the hump, and he’s got one more season on his current deal to make good. That’s the now of McDavid’s situation.
When asked if he needed to see something happen with this roster to feel more comfortable, he responded, “That’s a good question. What do I need to see? I guess the answer is, nothing. All the pieces are here for 2025-26.”
At the same time, he’s entrenched in making the right decision about his future. The paperwork isn’t finished on an extension, and Oilers fans are worried. Is it because he wants to leave? Or, is it about the changing NHL landscape?
Button also hinted that a shorter-term deal is likely, not out of uncertainty, but because the rising salary cap has changed the economic landscape. McDavid’s focus isn’t on leverage or drama — it’s on success.
In a recent interview with 32 Thoughts, McDavid was direct in a way that shed a bit more light on his feelings about negotiation timelines. Asked about timing, he made it clear that fans and media shouldn’t have assumed this extension would be automatic. “Everybody’s entitled to think whatever they want. I think people just kind of assumed that things were going to happen, and it just goes to show that not everybody knows exactly what’s going on.”
So what is McDavid thinking? Well, he's certainly "dug in" to the idea that he wants to take his time. “As I’ve said all along, you know I’ve said since June, I’m going to take my time with it, and I still intend to do that.”
“I’m not thinking much about contract talks,” he said, emphasizing that his energy is devoted to preparing for the season and trusting the process. His point is simple: playing hockey is what he knows, the business side is a distraction, and he’s not rushing a life-altering decision.
