Matthew Savoie’s Fit in the Oilers Future

The Edmonton Oilers traded Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio to the Buffalo Sabres for top-prospect Matthew Savoie. The news shocked the hockey world as neither player was thought to be available. While this trade puts an immediate question mark in the Oilers’ bottom six, it was worth it, as Savoie is a prospect at the caliber they have arguably not seen since Evan Bouchard.

The Edmonton Oilers made seven selections during the 2024 NHL Draft on June 28 and 29, including a pair of forwards from the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL): right-wing Sam O’Reilly, picked 32nd overall, and centre William Nicholl, taken at No. 196.

The Buffalo Sabres have the longest ongoing playoff drought in the NHL at 13 years, and in their continued effort to end that, on July 5, they traded their top prospect Matt Savoie to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio. While the return may have been less than some have anticipated, or expected, the reality of the situation is beyond clear; if the Sabres want something, they will have to pay through the nose to get it.

Oilers Trading Ryan McLeod to Sabres For Prospect Matt Savoie

The Edmonton Oilers have traded Ryan McLeod and prospect Tyler Tullio to the Buffalo Sabres for prospect Matt Savoie. McLeod, 24, is entering the final year of his $2.1 million AAV contract. He is an impressive two-way center who had 12 goals and 30 points in 81 games for Edmonton last season and will be a restricted free agent following the 2024-25 season. Savoie was one of the Sabres’ top prospects.
