The 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs are underway, and there isn’t much for the New York Islanders to be happy about. Of course, they are still in the playoff race, but they are down 2-0 in their best-of-seven series against the Carolina Hurricanes, and optimism is running short. Now seems to be a good time to look at some former Islanders who had regular-season success and are chasing the Stanley Cup.

Islanders’ Playoff Disappointment Reflective of Lamoriello’s Management

The New York Islanders are down 3-0 in the first round in what has been a one-sided series against the Carolina Hurricanes. They’ve been outplayed and it’s clear there is a gap between them and their opponent. The Islanders at best are a team that can make the playoffs and maybe pull off an upset in a series while the Hurricanes are destined to compete for the Cup.

After going down 2-0 in the first-round series against the Carolina Hurricanes, Islanders’ head coach Patrick Roy decided it was time to use his team’s de facto number-one goaltender, the one he had called his “Ferrari” hours before, Ilya Sorokin. It seemed like a sound plan, but after the Formula 1 severely backfired, Roy had to get the “Cadillac,” backup goaltender Semyon Varlamov, back in the crease. Now, in the aftermath of a 3-2 defeat in which Sorokin allowed all three goals, what are the implications?
