The Edmonton Oilers successfully signed Corey Perry as a UFA. But, they might not have been the only team interested. According to reports, the Toronto Maple Leafs also kicked tires here and we’re starting to learn about how hard they pushed to land the veteran forward.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have had a very good penalty kill (PK) over the last five seasons. Last year, they ranked 12th in the NHL with an 81.85% success rate. Unfortunately, this season, they have struggled. The team sits 27th in the league with a 76.74%, lumped in with non-playoff teams such as the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens. For a team that relies on their big guns to score, it’s very difficult to lock down wins when their PK is struggling.

Last night the Toronto Maple Leafs beat a solid Winnipeg Jets team in the last minute of overtime by a score of 1-0. The fact is that, despite the Maple Leafs’ win, the game was a struggle for the team, with their performance leaving much to be desired. For those who analyze the game, it pointed out a ton of things the team needs to improve as they enter the post-All-Star break; work the team’s coaching staff has to engage in practice. For now, it seems time to focus on how fortunate the team was to have had goalie Ilya Samsonov in the crease to carry them to the win.
NHL Rumors: Flyers, Devils, Flames, Maple Leafs, Blackhawks

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, big news dropped on Wednesday morning that five players were being told to surrender to the London Police Services regarding their involvement in an investigation into an alleged sexual abuse case surrounding 2018 Team Canada World Juniors players. The timing of the announcement comes as multiple NHL players have been granted indefinite leaves from their respective teams. In other news, Luke Fox, who broke the Ryan Reaves story, wonders if waivers is inevitable for the forward. Finally, former NHLer and now podcast host John Scott apologized for comments he made regarding former Blackhawk and now Edmonton Oilers forward Corey Perry.
