One of the most exciting aspects of the 2024 All-Star festivities was the announcements made regarding the future of NHL players’ participation in international events. In addition to the NHL’s Four Nations Face-Off, which will replace the All-Star events next season, Commissioner Gary Bettman revealed that the NHL and NHLPA have agreed with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) to allow NHL players to participate in the 2026 and 2030 Winter Olympics.
Celebrating Alex Pietrangelo’s Career at 1,000-Game Milestone

Congratulations to Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, who suited up for his 1,000th career NHL game in the club’s 5-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Feb. 12. In recognition of becoming the 40th active player to reach the milestone (he beat Brad Marchand out by one day), let’s do something we haven’t done enough of at The Hockey Writers: give Pietrangelo his flowers.
Phil Kessel’s Iron Man Streak Didn’t Come Easily

Without knowing the significance of the date, Nov. 3, 2009, was a big day for Phil Kessel. He had recently turned 22 and was set to take the ice for the first time since recovering from off-season shoulder surgery. He was also set to make his highly anticipated debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs following his famous trade from the Boston Bruins two months prior.
