Flyers Prospect Report: January 2024
February 1, 2024 by Justin Giampietro (Premium THW Flyers Substack Content)
Welcome to our Philadelphia Flyers Prospect Report for January 2024! In this edition, we look at how 11 different prospects have performed for the Orange and Black this month, spanning across leagues in North America and Europe. We examine the big guns, those who have risen in the rankings, and even some veterans.
Now on to the prospect report…
The Main Culprits: Matvei Michkov, Oliver Bonk, Denver Barkey, Samu Tuomaala, Emil Andrae, Alexei Kolosov
19-year-old Matvei Michkov has been battling sickness for a while now, and that didn’t stop in January. He only played seven games but really started to pick it up on Jan. 28 with a two-assist contest. Many view him as a goal-scoring monster — that’s not inaccurate, but he is a wonderful playmaker. In the Kontinental Hockey League this month, he has scored two goals and three assists. Unfortunately, he had a rotten last game which led to him being a healthy scratch on Jan. 31. With a contract in the KHL through the 2025-26 season, he should only continue to evolve as he approaches his NHL debut, so this shouldn't be too worrying.
Morgan Frost Could Be a Long-Term Fit for the Flyers
January 31, 2024 by Andrew McGuinness
On Jan. 9, Sportsnet released its list of 25 trade candidates to watch for the March 8 trade deadline. Two weeks later, The Athletic put out an article on 10 players falling out of favor with their current clubs and on the cusp of being moved (from ‘NHL trade candidates under the radar: 10 players who are falling out of favor,’ The Athletic, Jan. 23, 2024). Only one player appeared on both: Philadelphia Flyers center Morgan Frost.
Barry Ashbee: Flyers’ Stanley Cup Winning Coach & Player
January 31, 2024 by Matthew Ward
When many fans of the Philadelphia Flyers think of their favorite defensemen throughout the franchise’s history, names like Mark Howe, Eric Desjardins, Jimmy Watson, Chris Pronger, and Kimmo Timonen tend to immediately come to mind. For a team that has prided itself on physical play over the years, many tough and talented defensemen have made their mark on the franchise.
Flyers’ New-Style Rebuild Just Might Work
January 31, 2024 by Justin Giampietro
The rebuild approach that the Philadelphia Flyers have had has been rather unique. While they did trade some veterans last offseason, it was not to the extent that many true rebuilders do. They hung onto some pieces and, thus, are riding a 25-19-6 record, which is good enough for third in the Metropolitan Division. Their style won’t land them a first-overall draft pick like most teams trying to build themselves up typically do, but it allows them to build on the fly.
