In a blockbuster trade on Wednesday night, the Vancouver Canucks successfully landed their primary deadline target well ahead of this season’s NHL Trade Deadline. Picking up Elias Lindholm in a monster deal, the Canucks grabbed arguably the league’s best available two-way center. Here are some behind-the-scenes details we plan to share in lesser detail in the news and rumors report coming out later today.
Will the Canucks Try to Re-Sign Lindholm?
Rick Dhaliwal of Dhaliwal Sports provided a comprehensive trade recap and some of what might come next. While the team intends to try and re-sign Lindholm, Dhaliwal acknowledges the challenges, anticipating a high price for the player in the upcoming free agency on July 1.
Flames’ GM Craig Conroy said Lindholm trade talk was quiet until about four days ago when the Canucks jumped in and pushed hard. He immediately circled back with more than a handful of teams who had expressed early interest. Eric Franchise of Sportsnet notes, “Every interested team except one was willing to bring Lindholm in without first talking to Lindholm's agent about the possibility of signing an extension. The rest were willing to take their chances he might stay or simply use him as a rental.”
