Beyond The Scoresheet: What Jordan Staal Does for the Hurricanes Off the Stat Line
May 17, 2024 by Zach Martin (Premium Content)
In today’s NHL, the narrative surrounding players is “What have you done for me now?” or “He has to have [insert points] to be considered a good player”. However, there are more ways to contribute to the game and an individual team than just how many goals or points or wins/saves a player has in a season or even a career.
A new series here at The Hockey Writers deep dives at what players on the Hurricanes can do to help the team win “Beyond the Scoresheet”. Regarding Carolina Hurricanes forward Jordan Staal, he is a player who contributes more than what the scoresheet says. This first edition of the new series will focus on the Hurricanes captain who has been someone to point to for what he can do for head coach Rod Brind’Amour’s team than just by scoring goals and making highlight reel plays.
Hurricanes Playoff Quest Ends in Game 6 Loss vs Rangers
May 17, 2024 by Zach Martin
The 2023-24 season has ended for the Carolina Hurricanes. After rebounding from a 3-0 series deficit versus the New York Rangers in Round 2, they managed to force a Game 6 after clutch wins in Games 4 and 5. However, their luck ran out after losing 5-3 to be eliminated from the 2024 NHL Playoffs.
It is a loss that will sting for a while or at least until next season. A plethora of questions need to be answered this summer along with making some tough decisions about the roster. However, this will all come later, since it’s not been 24 hours since the Hurricanes’ season ended. Here’s a look at the Hurricanes’ final game, Game 6.
Takeaways From Day 1 of Hurricanes Exit Interviews
May 19, 2024 by Zach Martin
Exit interviews are one event no team wants to have in any round of the playoffs until they hoist Lord Stanley. Unfortunately for the Carolina Hurricanes, Day 1 of exit interviews occurred on Saturday, May 18 at PNC Arena. Day 2 will happen on Sunday (May 19) with those who didn’t go on the first day. The Hurricanes players who participated on Day 1 were Frederik Andersen, Brent Burns, Tony DeAngelo, Jake Guentzel, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Brett Pesce, Dmitry Orlov, Brady Skjei, Jaccob Slavin, Jordan Staal, and Teuvo Teravainen. The main focus that many fans were concerned about was the possible contract talks with Guentzel, Skjei, and Pesce. The rest of the team, minus Martin Necas due to being at the Men’s World Championship in Czechia, will interview on Sunday with head coach Rod Brind’Amour and general manager Don Waddell at a later date. What did those guys say to the media about their futures with the Hurricanes?

Brind’Amour Extension Was a No-Brainer for the Hurricanes
May 20, 2024 by Zach Martin
After being a main talking point since the end of the first round of the playoffs, questions and rumors began to circulate whether head coach Rod Brind’Amour and the Carolina Hurricanes were going to agree to a contract extension. General manager Don Waddell told the media before the start of the second round that he and Brind’Amour have been in talks every day about him staying in Carolina. It was a foregone conclusion that the two sides were eventually going to agree to an extension. On a Saturday night in May, it was finally put to rest whether a deal was getting done or not.
