Ducks' March Player of the Month: Alex Killorn
April is here, meaning it is time to discuss who had the best month of March on the ice for the Ducks. The award goes to...
On the ice, the Anaheim Ducks did not have a good month of March. While it began with an impressive win over the New Jersey Devils, during which Frank Vatrano had two goals and Lukas Dostal made a whopping 52 saves, they fell apart at the seams thereafter and merely managed wins over the lowly Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks. In total, they went 3-12-1. Included in this 16-game stretch was a seven-game losing streak, during which many players, including notable contributors such as Leo Carlsson, Mason McTavish, Troy Terry, and Frank Vatrano, either failed to produce or missed time because of injury. It leaves slim pickings for the honor for player of the month, but let’s take a look anyway…
If we have to give the honor to someone, then my vote is Alex Killorn, one of the Ducks’ two primary offseason acquisitions. He scored seven of the Ducks’ 25 goals this month and has taken on a steadying all-situations presence in the top-six with the Ducks. Let’s look at his month and the role he’s played during a season sabotaged by injuries to their young roster.
Killorn’s Offensive Exploits in March
In total, Killorn directly factored into eight of the 25 goals scored by the Ducks in March with seven goals and one assist. Those seven goals were nearly half of his season total (15). He started the month red hot and made his first appearance on the scoresheet in the March 3 loss to the Vancouver Canucks. He scored in three straight games after that to give him four goals in his first five games of the month. Pretty impressive.
His best game of the month was in the Ducks' thorough beatdown win over the Chicago Blackhawks on March 21. It was Killorn's second two-goal game of the season; he had three shots on goal and was a key part of the complete offensive effort that dismantled the Blackhawks. Head coach Greg Cronin praised Killorn's effort in the victory, calling out his skating, his taking ownership of his line, and his winning mentality.
